Visual adjustment to Threat Levels coming on Monday

The skill rating system is actually working very well at the moment, HOWEVER, we have realized that the end-user display of the data (the Threat Level Symbol - like "Bronze 1") are out of alignment, in particular since they visually show a very large number of players as Threat 1 for much too long while the system is learning the player's skill. In fact we will start changing the TL symbol much earlier in the process.

It's important to know that a player's REAL skill rating are going to be unaffected by this upcoming change, and this just alters the translation from the real system wide skill rating to the Threat Level display since the current translation skews too low to be practical (in other words, right now there is a VAST difference  between people at the very start of TL-1/Bronze-1 and at the very end of TL-1/Bronze-1. In fact the difference between start of TL-1 and end of TL-1 is greater than the distance between TL-3 and TL-11, which clearly is not an appropriate alignment to communicate how "dangerous" or "skilled" a particular player is).

In the higher threat levels the alignments are a bit more appropriate right now, and therefore will only be slightly adjusted by the upcoming change. And yes - we already have a few players (well under 0.5% at the moment) who have reached TL-30 (aka Gold 10). And they seem like the correct players in that category.

When the new threat level visual chart gets implemented Monday, everyone should see drastic jumps in their visual threat levels at that time (though - again - the underlying skill rating stays the same).

The other tweak we are working on a little longer term is modifying the matchmaking system. Because the new skill rating system produces numbers of a whole different magnitude (and accuracy), with the increased player volume they also don't translate very well into the original match making system. It works, it's just not terribly optimized for the new data, and seems to produce too many 4v3 and 2v3 and 2v4 matches at the moment for lower level players, leading to large backup call sequences. Interestingly, the skill rating gets accurately computed in the end no matter who was in the match (ie - if the match was uneven against you, but you still won - then you will clearly gain a lot from the match, in fact, losing a bad match under some conditions can make you move up in skill rating).

Therefore the other upcoming priority is to tweak how the matches are set up, especially now that we have far more information about a player's REAL skill level than we ever had before. Which is a very nice basis to start this change from. Based on this information we will be able to tweak the matchmaking to create better matches in a district at both low and higher levels.

And, there has been a lot of discussion about how we compute Skill Ratings. Without digging in to extreme detail, the basic paradigm of the new system is that at the end of a match the system takes all the ratings of the various team members, then determines a particular person's "participation" quotient in the match (if you don't participate much, you don't get much of the effect), and then the system updates players ratings in accordance whether they were EXPECTED to have wont the match or not. If one group of players were expected to have won, but still lost, then the penalty is much greater than the award they get if they were expected to have won and did win. If they were expected to lose, but still won, then they are going to get a much higher boost to their skill rating.

We will make a future dedicated post to skill ratings, and also start posting some of the data from the real live games so people can get a sense of how these matches play out and how players are shifting in skill ratings over time.

Finally - today for the past several hours we have had well over 250 registrations PER MINUTE for the game, and we expect all these new players to arrive in full force on Monday (except of course for the super-double-secret-early-invites we are doing before Monday morning - but those are of course a big secret). But Monday is also the day we will be formally reaching out to new players, so this coming week certainly should be very interesting.

    Hi Modgame - we are in fact working on tightening up the various rules for where/how players can or cannot lose.

    Also - it's silly for players to actively try to lose or even cheat to win, since the result is just then that you will be overmatched in your next game (and then will HAVE to continue disconnecting or attempt to cheat in other ways). Don't drink the koolaid.

    But for those who do - we are in fact looking at how we can tighten the ratings requirements (same with kicking your OWN team when you win, so that YOU get most of the positive rating - since that's another "not awesome" move).

    How this threat level can really works , when you can "exit apb" or "return to lobby" when you are about to lose missions so you wont lose your TL!!
    At least make it once you "exit apb" or "return to lobby" while in a mission to count as loss , and generally even a dc or crash of game when you are in mission must count as loss!!!! + rename "exit apb" to "exit apb:r"
    You are doing really good work guys... keep up and don't forget some major issues like high ms/Queue in districts for easier "join us group"/sli,crossfirex not working/(and hunting sight with with cooling jacket= loss of "increase zoom lvl 5 deggres" from hunting sight), sorry of saying too much here but in forum i have written that things many times and nobody pays attention.

    Are you focusing on the skill rating system right now or still working on other stuffs like minor bug fixes and such? Like the bug that occurs when you switch cars (no siren and weird color for the car you swap to) and the fact that players killed in a car you blow up don't count for the role of the weapon used to blow the car up (very annoying for lmg and rocket launcher users), and probably others I didn't notice yet.

  10. Damn you guys are doing great things over there at G1. I'm not trying to flaunt this or talk down on other players but a lot of them are "not as good" as the original RTW players and CBTs. I just hope all their complaining doesn't make the game "too easy" in the future. This game has a learning curve and they just have to get used to it. This isn't your normal F2P game. It takes time to learn the ropes and be strategic and tactful during APBs aginst better players. Also, as far as all the complaining about weapons goes, I'm still using the STAR unmodded and ripping shit up. As always love the devotion towards the community. Keep up the good work.

  12. I am curious because this has happened to me once or twice. When a player exits the game while on a mission, does it still count as having beat that player when the game calculates rewards at the end of the mission. A lot of high threat players (Gold and Silver) do this to my low bronze team and I am just curious if this is penalizing us as well as inflating their scores. Not that it matters since they obviously aren't as good as the game says they are, but sometimes they are really hard to beat.

  18. 0.5% TL 30? of which at least 95% of hacker .... I am looking forward to Monday ... for then you should keep your promise and OB appointment, and banns cut out! So much has been banned were not supposed to age .... laughable when you allowed cheaters and hackers to play , but customers banned because they are supposedly too young (without Demonstrate the most part)

  19. People gotta understand hackers are allowed in beta so they aren't there when it fully launches. It's so they know what the hackers are doing and implement what's needed to keep them out. As for age, that's not G1s fault you may be to young to play a game rated above your age level.

    I'm still worried about the cheaters/hackers, there are going to be a lot of people cheating, i hope your on top of the cheating problem, because people like me will turn their back and walk away from the money they have spent and cut their loses.

    i hope to play for a vary long time, but if i see to many cheaters I'm gone, and so you know i have been playing shooters for a vary long time and have my brother coming to play as well, we will just say more then 40yrs of shooter skills combined. we will not put up with cheaters.

    a small suggestion for the whole "kicking players from your own team and returning to lobby" thing if i may

    if your servers can handle it how about storing match data for each player (logged every 5 mins or so) as well as a duration log for the full match

    and then instead of only calculating the new TL at the end of a match do it once a player leaves the match (leaves, kicked, disconnected, massive world destroying computer explosion) with some sort of relation between total match length and player proformance while they were there

    if this then added / subtracted to the TL on next log in (or if the player is still online right away) you'd also have fixed some really frustrating moment where you get disconnected just seconds before the last stage of a really long and good match

    with two well match teams and the right mission some of these match can drag on for atleast 30 mins and it really really blows to disconnect right at the end and get nothing for it all

  23. So, will this stop 1vs4's from happening, because Its very hard to arrest criminals when they outnumber you, or you have a team on backup who focuses on killing. I would like 1vs1's back into the game. And matches should be based more on equipment then threat. Players of high ranking are lowering there threat to get worse players so they win them without any problems to progress faster with contacts.

  24. Nice job with the threat rating. Now I feel I 'm being properly awarded rating. No drops to your TL just cause the matchamking threw you alone with 4 TL1 vs a bunch of TL6gold and ofc you lost.

    Really it's refreshing to see some work was actually done and my money weren't wasted.

    However I 'm not leaving a post without a whine (you add cheese)!!! Since yday i ve been playing a lot in Waterfront. The game's memory fills up pretty fast. In two hours it reaches critical levels and have to restart APB so that it doesnt CTD or worse. I wouldnt mind as much, if it was every 6 hours. But hey, its every two damn hours!!
    I m using WinXP sp3 32bit and I 've got 4gigs of ram. I tried the "/3GB parameter in boot.ini" workaround but APB crashes (totally stalls) in the first 2 minutes of in-district time.
    FYI the frequency of crashes doubled when you introduced the "new improved" low-end-graphics on some patch after 1.5.0.

    Also I think you cleared out some cheaters, but didnt clear all of them (especially most of the "knights" clan in Obeya, keep aimbotting in a ridiculously apparent manner). I strongly hope they re all history on Monday (given your good work on TL system)...

  26. Please, PLEEASSSEEE!!! Add pureskill servers! There is no way I can beat someone with health regen and damage mods when they have a modded weapon that can kill me in 2 or 3 hits. I dont even get a chance to fire.

  28. The servers are overloaded and unstable. to high ping times. we need better server hardware that can do more work. when 100 people in the district are the ping starts to rise! at 300 people in the social, he is at 1500ms

  29. and yet i am lagging in game i got horroble lag spikes even on low detail. its the same bug or what ever as in the old APB its like teh game freezes and boom your actually dead if you are in a mission.

  30. I think the TL system has a severe bug and is giving people some sort of ridiculous negative/positive. I have been at TL 1 bronze for days. I have been winning 90ish% of my missions or more against higher TL players. Today I won 32/35 missions and did not budge. It's a typical day, I played all day Thurs, Fri, Sat. Meanwhile I know a max TL player who isn't very skilled, solo queues and wins 50/50. My KD ratio is good, I contribute plenty on most missions...it is BUGGED, there is something very wrong. I suspect some sort of ridiculous number values have snuck in, like +-358632984756937162. Please investigate further.

    - That sounds kinda the system is based on bringing people into matches they are expected to lose? That doesn't seems fair or balanced.
    I too felt the new system was hard, cause i was dropped into 3-on-1 f.e. where me one (R74) against 3 people (all R>100). I called for reinforcements... one guy actually joined my team (R50 or so). Not worth to mention, we totally got ripped.
    Yesterday i was running into 5 matches in line which seemed to be unfair (stronger and/or more enemys) BUT one match we won... and true word spoken by Bjorn... i was getting awesome high rewards (something about: 2,5k money, 3k rep.)
    Don't get me wrong, i just want to know:
    The new system puts players into unfair matches, they are most likely to lose, intentionally?
    If so, couldn't you make some kinda mechanism that people, after getting such an unfair mission, are protected for next several missions from not running into an unfair battle again? Ok, maybe that would result into some players getting no missions anymore cause they are just too good :D
    I dunno, putting people into unfair matches on intend just sounds wrong to me.

  37. Thank god! I will have a chance playing with my rank! This will be better for us cause we gain more experience fighting with our kind like I don't learn anything by getting noob-pwned by stronger players. Now we fight with our rank.

    Yea thats true. It's not fun to get 1/8 or even 0/8 against stronger players. But it's not fun to get 8/1 with ACT 44 against weaker players even if I get kills to my roles but its not fun because they feel the same (maybe) as when I get 1/8 so I know how it feels :P

  49. just for a fyi too you noob about the site relating to the game login.

    the website databse is linked to the game for login to the actually game itself. which is why you have to create a G1 account.

    and yes servers are up and running and you can play as long as you were logged in and playing prior to the website crash. but if you log out of the game then your going to have to wait until the database is back up so you can log in and play.

  58. @June: "Oh no I'm hardware banned..." *Uninstalls game* ;) (sure you can use a MAC spoofer, but they're temperamental at best and I'm pretty sure the majority of "casual hackers" won't be inclined to dig around enough to work out how to use one.)

    @Bjorn: I'm going to say it again - this game is nowhere near ready for OBT.

    Sorry, but that's the truth, and I know I'm far from the only one who thinks this.

    The new threat rating system is a massive improvement, especially when these tweaks are done.

    The matchmaking system on the other hand needs sorting out yesterday, because at the moment it doesn't even seem to be trying to pull a fair match any more - almost as if it doesn't even bother to take the threat rating into account when it does the match. Tell me - how can it have thought even in the wildest of exceptional circumstances that matching 4 low-silver players against 4 mid-gold players was even remotely fair? And then to add insult to injury, give them the option to call in another 4 low-gold players and we get nothing?

    You really need to get those adjustments to the matchmaking system in before OB otherwise there's going to be *A LOT* of veeeeeery disappointed people who will just /ragequit before the week is out, stating that the game is full of hackers and destroying the little bit of reputation this game still has left.

    More than that though, your servers are evidently straining under the load you have at the moment. How on earth do you plan to add a few hundred thousand more? You think the 1600ms latency everyone is getting in Social at the moment is bad? Once OB starts you can forget trying to get in there at all, so I hope you've all done with character and car designs, because you won't be doing any for the next week at least. And as others have pointed out, the districts are still choking and dropping FPS.

    I only hope you'll turn round and say "oh, don't worry - we can handle 10x this amount of players, we're just throttling it at the moment", but if not then... well, guess I'll be playing Minecraft for the next week or two until they all leave again, because the game just won't be physically playable like that.

    So yeh, by all means prove me and everyone else wrong. In fact I genuinely hope I am wrong. But as it currently stands, I think this week isn't going to be the huge success that you guys at G1 seem to think it will be, and things are about to get a little bit mental.

    @GamersLast: You know, it always puzzles me why people like yourself decide that hacking is "cool". I'm not having a go at you, I'm just genuinely curious - what do you actually get out of doing it?

    I mean, think about it for a second (seriously, hear me out and really think about what I'm saying):

    First of all, by admitting you hack, you are admitting that you possess no skill whatsoever (otherwise why would you bother doing it in the first place?). You realise that isn't a desirable thing to admit in this day and age, right?

    Secondly, you are admitting to not being particularly wise about the world. I mean, you're giving your credit card details to some guys who obviously have questionable morale ethics in the first place because they hack. Is that really a logical or smart decision?

    Thirdly, you're not even a hacker - you're just paying someone else to do all the hacking for you. All you are is a cheater, so you can't even claim that it takes skill to do what you do.

    Fourth, you don't get that "oh wow this guy is good" factor out of it, because people will often just attribute your high KDR to hacks anyway, even if you are genuinely skilled.

    Fifth, this game is more tactical than twitch, so high KDR only gets you so far. No amount of hacks can help improve your skills at out-flanking / ambushing etc, so you still get your ass kicked by players that are genuinely skilled.

    Sixth, and partially related to the fifth point, you don't develop any personal skills as a player, because you're relying on the hacks to do the work for you.

    Tell me, where is the fun in any of that? What do you get in return for all those downsides? You get to momentarily piss off a few anonymous faces on the internet? Trust me, it's far funnier to smash a team of hackers into the ground, t-bag them, then listen to them /rage at me after the mission is over while I proceed to grief them for another 10 minutes until I get bored. Now *THAT* is entertainment, and I don't loose my credit card to the black market in the process.

    In short, you think it's cool to be labelled as a hacker, but in reality - the joke's on you buddy. Doesn't really bother me if you point your aimbot in my direction, I'll just say "meh" and move on once the mission is over. Can you do the same thing? ;)

    bro can you do something about Nitro for cars im really disapointed at how utterly useless Nitro 2 is for my car its worse than it was during RTW and it was pretty crappy back then but now its downright useless which sucks i really like the idea of nitro on cars yet i find my self not using it cause its so useless compared to all other mods available please buff nitro or fix it cause it def feels broken i have already open a topic in bug report and no one has bothered to answer :( oh well i thought i try here as well

  63. @Bjorn, I will say one thing. Backup sequences that chain off one-another, as long as the backup is always taken, tend to form very fun matches. 7v7 and 8v8 can be a hell of a lot more fun than a 3v3 or 4v4.

  68. well that might be why i never get higher TL ,keep getting missons whit 2 TL and no wounder i can never get my lvl up , even when i play whit friends that are around silver 2 - 6 just bronz opps . so the system dosent realy work like it should , not even close if you ask me .

  69. Me and my team have won against TL30's several times, but we don't gain any threat. After the mission the TL30's usually loses their threat, which is good.. but we, my team, don't gain any threat at all.

    Also, my team of four usually tends to get matched up against low threat players; so, they usually end up being 7vs4 and there is nothing wrong with this. Buuuut.. then again we don't gain any threat at all even though they are more in numbers. in short, they have nothing to lose, and we just can't gain any threat from winning against them even though they are more in numbers which balances things out.

    Is it supposed to be like this, or are you going to make one able to gain threat if the low threat opponents are more in numbers?

  70. Q: Please explain how I can win 28 out of 31 matches with all positive scores like 5-2, 10-3, etc. With 4v8 matches aswell and still drop from silver 5, which I was when I started, to silver 4 when we lost the last match.

    i find this to be a big problem, and its funny i don't see anyone on Blog bringing it up.

    i don't remember the build# but the update that reset TL's is when i started having problem with the building Javez is in rendering about 5sec after i spawn in it.

    and for my team mate the whole world is rendering slow now, she runs into walls and buildings all the time.

  87. Will be happy when threat calculation includes people who quit matchs when it becomes clear they will lose, before it was just annoying and only served to inflate their own threat. Now that it effects everyone's threat, (system thinks the winning team won because it was 4v1 after 3 or more ppl left), it has become a serious problem. Unfortunately you have to include disconnections, and that's terrible because there are so many crashes still, but how can you tell who crashed or lose connection legitimately from those that plug pull.
    A better solution to threat would have been one where player skill was the only thing calculated, kill/deaths/accuracy/ect., in relation to the relative threat of the enemy faced on an individual basis. Quite possibly a more difficult approach, but it would solve the problems that both RTW threat and G1 threat systems have, being that they rely far too much on win/loss in a game where mission's are often one sided (VIP missions where teams hold up in building so defensible, getting a single kill, let alone the 8 required to win is nearly impossible. Or the enf hated "stay alive" mission, where an entire team can just scatter and run around 800m apart from each other for the duration.

    Changing subject, hackers. I agreed with G1's stance of keeping them around for a little bit to "study" their behavior and all that jazz. However as of late I find myself doubtful of their actual ability to deal with it. How much information could you possibly need from a specific method of hacking? It would be logical to stomp on these hackers as soon as you have collected enough information to detect future breaches, forcing those who still feel hacking to be a prosperous venture to create additional ways to trick the game into thinking they are good, so you can stomp on those too. The fact that G1 has let the same people continue to spoil the game for so many for so long. If they can't do it yet, they should have been spending their time on this instead of getting armas in place and selling EXPENSIVE lease weapons. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the payment system G1 has settled on, although things could be better.
    I think that if G1 is insistent on monetizing the game before they are comfortable removing beta status, then really the game being in beta is just a shield they can use against criticism. That's why I refuse to go premium or lease weapons for real cash until G1 pushes the game to a release build that is release quality.

  88. Matchmaking is awful. I get matched against players with a much higher rating. They have better weapons and stuff, it's just ridiculous. I don't mind getting matched against people with higher rating, but at least my group should be bigger than theirs, and not equal size. I'm starting to understand why people cheat so much at this game.

    Another thing; last mission I had to defend some spots. I died defending the second spot, and then they raided the last 3 spots without me even getting closer to any of them. I spawned so far away from the third spot that I could never reach the next spot in time, I was always behind. Whoever defends, should be able to teleport nearby the next spot once the previous one is raided.
